This pdf looks broken in acrobat and osx preview too, so I'm going to say there's something wrong with the pdf.  Can you attach a screenshot of yours though?

With Evince I don't see the 'R', but I can see it if I select the text. With pdf.js it's always invisible.

Which of R's? I cannot spot the difference between Reader and pdf.js. There is one R that hidden behind picture. But you can select it as in Evince.

When I select the 'R' in Evince, I can actually see the letter.
When I select the 'R' in pdf.js, I can't see the letter.

The letter "R" in the formula is selectable with the PDF Viewer. It's hidden because the figure hides partially the formula, it's a PDF issue.

Closed as invalid.

It isn't hidden in Evince (when selected). Have you tested with Adobe Reader?

I don't have Reader, but Nuance PDF. The letter is selectable but not visible.

I just checked this document with Adobe Reader X (version 10.1.4, english) and with Adobe Reader XI (version 11.0.10, english) on Windows 7. The letter "R" is not visible, because it's hidden behind image.
This is document issue, *not* Firefox issue.

Is the letter "r" visible when you select it?

No, it's not.
Below I am attaching 2 screenshots with: everything selected and with just invisible "R" selected. In both cases you can't see "R".
Firefox is displaying this PDF in exactly same way as Adobe Reader XI.
